A Day at the Dairy

We have been wanting to make a trip to Uncle Greg’s dairy for quite some time.  The kids had a couple days off of school for Tri-State break {earlier this fall}, so we got it lined up.  We left town about 8:30 and made the trek to Salix.  In spite of the cold windy day, we had so much fun.  We got the full tour from Dairyman Greg himself.  It was fun to see what Uncle Greg does all day.  After seeing the dairy it is a wonder that he has time to sleep at all!  There were a few highlights of the trip.  Everyone agreed that witnessing the mama cow giving birth to her baby was awesome.  Coming in at a close second, was rolling, jumping, and playing in the cotton seed.  For me, the highlight was to see the incredible scale of the dairy.  I knew it was big, but I didn’t grasp how big until seeing it in person.  It is one thing to hear about 5,000 cows, it is another to see the 5, 000 cows.

After touring the dairy, we headed over to the calf ranch.  I am not sure if the kids were more intrigued with the hundreds of baby calves, or the huge {mangy} dog that also called the ranch his home.

The kids fell in love with this calf.  If her big brown eyes and long eyelashes weren’t enough, she was marked with a heart right on her forehead.  She was a beauty!  After we were finished at the calf ranch, the kids were tired and hungry.  I packed lunches to eat on the way home which worked out perfect.  The little girls gobbled up their lunches and then napped the rest of the way home.  What a fun day!
